Establishing Your Market Position

This episode explores how photographers can establish and improve their market position by understanding three pricing strategies: budget, competitive, and luxury positioning.

Key Concepts

Market position is the value proposition your brand occupies in the market, and more importantly, in the buyer's mind.

Three Positioning Tiers

  1. Budget Positioning — an initial strategy to fill your pipeline while building your business
  2. Competitive Positioning — pricing in the middle range of your local market; requires researching competitor rates
  3. Luxury Positioning — premium pricing paired with exceptional quality and service throughout the client experience

Critical Principle

The price you charge is directly linked to the value you provide. You cannot charge luxury prices and deliver a budget experience.

Two Improvement Strategies

Big Leap: make significant changes during slow periods, substantially increase value (albums, portfolios, client management), and raise prices simultaneously.

Incremental: small, consistent increases on a set schedule, suited to year-round work or multiple revenue streams. Plan five-year pricing goals and work backward to annual targets.
