Leica
Das Wesentliche (The Essentials)
The Inventor of 35mm
Leica is not a camera brand; it is a religion. In 1913, Oskar Barnack invented the 35mm format (using cinema film for stills), creating modern photography.
For 100 years, Magnum photographers have carried Leicas into war zones and onto street corners. Today, they occupy a unique space: equal parts luxury jewelry and precision tool. A Leica Rangefinder (M series) forces you to slow down, focus manually, and think before you shoot.
"The Experience is the Product"
Everything about a Leica is tactile.
- The M-System: No autofocus. No video (mostly). Just a bright optical window and a rangefinder patch. It connects you to the subject in a way an EVF never can.
- The Monochrom: Leica is the only company bold enough to sell a $9,000 camera that only shoots black and white (removing the color array for purer detail and ISO performance).
- The Red Dot Tax: Yes, you pay for the brand. But you also pay for brass, hand-assembly in Germany, and lenses that hold their value better than gold.
What they do better than anyone else
### 1. Zone Focusing (Street Photography) The layout of a Leica lens—with distance scales and a focus tab—is designed for "shooting from the hip." A skilled Leica shooter doesn't even look through the viewfinder; they know the distance by feel.
### 2. The "Leica Look" Leica lenses (Summilux, Summicron) are legendary for their "micro-contrast" and 3D pop. They render out-of-focus areas (bokeh) in a way that feels painted rather than computed.
M-Mount & L-Mount
- M-Mount (Rangefinder): Mechanical linkage. Small, dense, manual focus only. Compatible with cameras from 1954 to 2024.
- L-Mount (SL Series): Modern autofocus mirrorless. Shared with Panasonic and Sigma. The SL lenses are massive, clinically perfect, and astronomically expensive.
Decoding the German
- M (Messsucher): The Rangefinder. (e.g., M11).
- Monochrom:* Black and White only sensor.
- P (Professional):* Removing the Red Dot logo for stealth (e.g., M10-P).
- Q: Full Frame Compact with fixed 28mm lens. The "Gateway Drug" to Leica.
- SL: Modern Mirrorless (competitor to Sony a7/Nikon Z8).
- Lens Names (By Aperture):
- Noctilux:* f/0.95 ( The Dream Lens)
- Summilux:* f/1.4
- Summicron:* f/2.0
